Taking after by the likes of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, Jesse Mitchell's blues-roots music is influenced not only by their laid-back style but also their explicit and dissenting commentary of society and its failings.
Artists like Bob Dylan, Xavier Rudd, John Butler, Midnight Oil, Rage Against the Machine and many others have also encouraged him to write politically, demonstrating how one can remain an activist at heart, using music as a medium to share ones views.
The song ‘Revenge' featured on his debut EP, 'The Twilight' is a reflection on the Abu Ghraib prison torture and abuse scandal with a dual focus of bringing the issue out of the shadows whilst proclaiming a need for empathy and forgiveness on a personal and political scale.
"I always write a song for a person or with a purpose in mind, otherwise its just a good-sounding noise and I might as well just hit the demo function on my old-skool keyboard for some funky tunes." In the words of Michael Franti, “to be rhyming without a real reason, is to claim but not to practice a religion.”
